외국 고전영화를 보고 싶으세요?

오래전에 세계 고전영화를 하나하나 챙겨 보던 적이 있었다. 이론과 실천에서 나온 <세계영화사>, 그리고 연세대학교 출판부에서 나온 <세계영화사 강의>라는 책에서 언급되던 영화들이었다. 이 책들을 읽으며 이 영화는 꼭 봐야겠다는 생각이 들어 메모지에 적어두고 영상자료실에 가보면, 의외로 없는 영화가 많아 실망하곤 했다. 유명한 영화인데 소장하고 있지 않은 이유를 확인해보니 국내에 출시된 DVD만 구입해서 비치하기 때문이었다.

국내에 출시되는 해외 DVD의 면면을 살펴보면 흥행에 성공했던 신작들이 대부분을 차지한다. 외국 우수고전 DVD들이 수입되기는 하지만 수익이 낮은 탓에 간간이 출시되고 있기 때문에 외국 고전 DVD 타이틀이 국내에 수입되는 것을 마냥 바랄 수만도 없는 노릇이다.

이러한 상황은 영화과가 있는 대학에서도 마찬가지인 듯하다. 학과별로 유명한 영화들에 대해서는 저화질의 비디오테이프나 DVD를 일부 구비해 놓고는 있으나 제대로 된 열람 자료를 갖추기에는 한계가 있다고 한다. 반드시 봐야 할 영화라고 한다면 궁여지책으로 개인이 아마존에서 직접 구입하거나(관세와 운송료를 포함하면 그 비용이 만만치 않다!), 혹은 어둠의 경로를 통하려는 유혹에 빠질 수밖에 없는 현실이다.

지난해 말에 DVD 수집을 담당하는 직원과 그 문제에 대해 서로 공감하며 구입 목록에 대한 조사를 시작하고 구입을 위한 예산도 일부 편성해놓았다. 구입을 위한 목록 조사는 세계영화사 교과서라고 할 수 있는 몇몇 도서를 탐독하고 중요 영화를 리스트 업 하는 것이었다. 다음으로 영상자료실에 구비되어 있는지를 조사한 후, 소장하고 있지 않은 경우에 미국과 영국의 아마존을 뒤져 구입이 가능한지 일일이 검색하는 방법으로 진행했다. 지난 4월에 초창기 영화(뤼미에르 형제, 토머스 에디슨, 조르주 멜리어스, 그리피스 등), 1910년에서 1940년까

지 영화사조의 주요작, 주요 감독의 작품, 대표 흥행작(사실주의, 독일 표현주의, 누아르 영화, 미국 할리우드 시대별 대표 흥행작) 등을 포함한 1차분 목록 135종(컬렉션 포함)을 완성했고, 구매부서에 구입을 의뢰했다. 외국 고전영화 DVD 구입을 대행한 사장님이 아마존에서 하나하나 구입한 뒤 한꺼번에 모아서 납품했는데 무려 3개월이나 걸렸다.

지난달에는 후속 작업으로 2차 구입계획을 입안하고 구매를 의뢰했다. 2차 구입대상은 1차 구입분에 이어 1930년대부터 1980년대 초반에 이르는 유럽 및 제3세계 국가들의 주요 작품(초기 유럽영화, 유럽 뉴웨이브 영화, 인도, 일본, 칠레 등)을 포함했는데, 총 143종 283점에 달한다. 아쉽지만 이 영화들을 영상자료실에서 만나려면 최소 2개월은 기다려야 할 것 같다.
비록 한글 자막은 없으나 이미 영상자료실에서 열람할 수 있는 작품은 아래와 같다. 2010년을 기점으로 이러한 해외 고전 DVD의 조사 및 구입을 계속할 예정이니 날로 풍성해질 한국영상자료원 영상자료실을 기대해주시기 바란다.
